The Issue

The Canadian Indigenous water crisis is a grave issue affecting many First Nations communities across the country. Despite Canada being one of the wealthiest nations with abundant freshwater resources, numerous Indigenous communities lack access to clean drinking water—a basic human right. This situation is both unacceptable and solvable if we take urgent and collective action.

According to statistics from Indigenous Services Canada, as of February 2021, there were 59 long-term drinking water advisories in effect in 41 Indigenous communities. While progress has been made since the government promised in 2015 to end long-term advisories by March 2021, delays and challenges persist. These advisories have a profound impact on the health, well-being, and economic opportunities of Indigenous people, with families forced to boil water for drinking, which is a temporary fix, not a solution.

Many factors contribute to this crisis: the remoteness of communities, inadequate infrastructure, lack of technical support, and inadequate funding are just a few. Addressing these issues requires a well-coordinated effort involving federal and provincial governments, Indigenous leadership, civil society, and the private sector. Together, these stakeholders must commit to investing in sustainable water infrastructure, offering training and support to local operators, and ensuring equitable access to funding and resources.

Effective solutions include increasing funding for water and wastewater infrastructure projects in Indigenous communities, establishing independent oversight mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability, and upgrading existing water treatment plants to meet national standards. We also need to provide Indigenous communities with the resources to build their own capacity and maintain water systems locally.

Addressing the water crisis in Indigenous communities is not just a matter of resources but also one of justice and respect for Indigenous rights. Ensuring access to safe and clean water is crucial for achieving reconciliation and supporting the health and prosperity of these communities.

Sign this petition to urge the Canadian government to fulfill its promises and take decisive action toward a long-term, sustainable solution. Let’s come together to ensure that all Canadians, including Indigenous peoples, have equal access to clean and safe drinking water.
