ADDRESS SPEEDING, RECKLESS DRIVING, AND PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS ON W ATHERTON DRIVE
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of 4200 S - 1300 W and surrounding areas, urgently request action to address the ongoing and dangerous issues of excessive speeding, reckless driving, street racing, and DUI incidents occurring in our community. Our neighborhood has become a high-speed corridor for drivers evading law enforcement, putting our lives, our children, and our property at constant risk.
Our Concerns:
Multiple accidents have occurred, endangering residents and damaging property.
Reckless speeding and racing have turned our street into a speedway.
High-speed police chases frequently take place, further increasing the danger.
Drivers under the influence (DUI) are contributing to accidents and putting everyone at risk.
Multiple children have been hit, with the latest incident resulting in a serious injury. Months later, the child is still in a wheelchair.
Increased police patrols have only provided temporary relief, and harsher penalties have not been effective in deterring reckless driving.
For three months, we have attended community meetings, sent emails, and made phone calls, yet we have been ignored with no responses or action from city officials.
Additional Efforts by Concerned Residents:
In an effort to ensure the safety of our neighborhood, we have personally invested $700 in surveillance cameras to monitor a significant portion of W Atherton Drive. These cameras are strategically placed to capture incidents of reckless driving, speeding, and any other dangerous activity in our area. We are sharing all footage with the local police department to aid in investigations and support enforcement efforts.
Our Requests:
We call on the city to implement urgent and effective measures, including but not limited to:
Permanent traffic calming solutions such as speed bumps or traffic circles to physically slow down vehicles.
Installation of stop signs, flashing lights, and better street lighting in critical areas.
A marked crosswalk at 4223 S Atherton Drive to improve safety for families and children, especially in the area where a kindergartener was hit.
Engagement with traffic engineers to develop long-term, sustainable solutions.
Community meetings with local officials to discuss and implement effective strategies beyond temporary enforcement.
Why This Matters:
Our street should not be a racetrack or an escape route for criminals. We deserve to feel safe in our own homes, to allow our children to play outside without fear, and to walk our streets without the constant threat of being hit by a speeding vehicle. We refuse to wait for another tragedy to occur before action is taken.
We, the undersigned, demand immediate attention to this matter and request a response outlining the steps that will be taken to address our concerns.
Sincerely,
The Concerned Residents of 4200 S - 1300 W and Surrounding Areas
