Address speeding and drunk driving on rural farm roads

The Issue

Dear neighbors,

I’m reaching out because our “rural road”, 132nd Ave, has become increasingly dangerous. Over the past years, we’ve seen a rise in speeding vehicles, and alarmingly, suspected drunk drivers using this route as a shortcut. Many of us live and work along this stretch — families, children, farm animals and equipment, and of course wild animals all need to share this same small space. The risk of is growing every day of a major accident with multiple fatalities.  Continually bear and deer are hit hard and fast enough to kill adults.  How much longer until it is a family walking or biking, out enjoying the day?

(I have only lived here for 5.5 years and have witnessed not only my own children almost getting hit while crossing the street (a 70ft tread mark was left on the road from the person trying to stop) but multiple people speeding down our street everyday, to drunk drivers taking out the wooden meridians, multiple accidents from speeding, etc. etc.
There have already been too many fatalities on our street to continue to let this happen!

We need the City and the RCMP to take meaningful action before a serious accident happens again. To show that our community stands together, I’ve started a petition asking for:
·  Increased RCMP patrols and roadside checks

·  Speed limit enforcement and traffic calming measures  (our neighborhood group has pleaded for 15 years)

·  Clearer signage and community safety awareness

Your signature can help demonstrate that this is not just an isolated concern but a shared priority for everyone who travels, works, or lives here.
Please take a moment to sign the petition https://c.org/knchz9ySwk and share it with others in the area. Together, we can push for the attention and enforcement our road urgently needs.

Thank you for your support and commitment to keeping our community safe.

In 2011 through 2013, in response to concerns raised by the Alouette Valley Association and others, the (then) District of Maple Ridge committed to the consideration of management strategies of 132nd ave from 216th to 232nd streets. (This road section gets heavy usage from not only the property owners, but also the residents of Silver Valley and Fern Crescent areas as it provides a link to other trails and roadways. This roadway was built as a narrow rural road and was never intended to become the route it is today.)

Urban Systems Ltd. was hired to study and submit recommendations.  This process was agreed upon by Urban Systems, Maple Ridge Engineering Department, AVA, and the Neighborhood Transportation Advisory Committee.  https://avalley.ca

Agreed upon OUTCOMES in 2013:

(As outlined in the initial petition that was signed by hundreds of users of this area.)

A safe space for pedestrians, bicycles and horses must be created.
To slow traffic to at least the posted speed. (50 km)
Have minimal conflict with wildlife, trees, the North Alouette River and private properties
Be feasible and cost effective

Sadly, in 2026, we now need to ADD increased RCMP roadside checks to our current petition to address the increasing number of drunk driving accidents along 132nd as impaired drivers use this road to by pass other more heavily scrutinized roads.

Since 2013 there have been multiple Phase 1 “quick fixes” completed.  They include the Multi-use pathway along 132nd that is somewhat protected by a heavy rail fence.  (This pathway is now very popular with cyclists, walkers, and runners from Silver Valley, Rock Ridge and other areas as it provides a necessary recreational link to local parks and paths.)   Road lines were painted including the no passing yellow lines.  Increased signage and markings were added.

Unfortunately, Phase 2, Traffic Calming has not been followed through on by the city.  In 2026 we are now faced with even heavier traffic traveling at unsafe speeds and conditions.  The Multi use pathway fence has been hit and wiped out in sections more times that can be counted.  The city has to bear the cost of these repairs.  Users are now concerned about their and their family’s safety when using this recreational pathway due to UNSAFE DRIVERS on this road.  Vehicle accidents and wildlife deaths (bear and deer) are now way too common along this stretch of 132nd ave.  This is unnecessary !!!!

PLEASE CONSIDER signing and sharing this petition to urge the City to implement traffic calming/speed controls on this dangerous stretch of road, as recommended by Urban Systems in 2013 and numerous times since.  We ALL should be able to enjoy the beautiful Alouette Valley views, wildlife and river safely.  Thank you!!!
