The Issue

The recent reduction of lanes on our local highway has led to increased traffic congestion and reduced space for drivers to safely avoid collisions. In sections previously designated as single-lane, drivers adhering to the speed limit have narrowly avoided rear-end collisions due to slower-moving traffic. By converting most of the highway to a single lane, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has unintentionally heightened the risk of accidents. Highway 42, which is a crucial artery for residents, daily commuters, and visitors, has seen significant changes in its lane markings. While safety improvements are commendable, these changes have resulted in unintended consequences, notably, an alarming increase in traffic congestion and compromised driver safety. Residents and commuters alike have experienced extended travel times and more frequent incidents of abrupt braking, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

ODOT's decision to modify these lanes requires immediate reassessment to mitigate these risks. According to the Federal Highway Administration, lane reductions can often result in unexpected bottlenecks and decreased route efficiency. This holds particularly true for highways witnessing high traffic volumes and diverse vehicle speeds, such as Highway 42. Statistically, reducing multi-lane roads to single-lane can increase traffic delays by 20-35%. We've observed these very outcomes on our route, affecting daily commutes and increasing frustration.

We urge ODOT to consider a comprehensive review of these lane changes and to consult further with community members and transport experts. Possible solutions could include restoring dual lanes on key segments of the highway, implementing clearer signage, or instituting peak hour traffic management strategies. There is a dire need for these revisions to prevent future accidents and improve the safety and efficiency of our highway.

Please join us in urging ODOT to address this critical issue by signing this petition. Your voice can lead to meaningful change—let's advocate for a safer and more efficient Highway 42 for all of us.
