Address issues at IS 429Q for special education students
The Issue
I am a concerned parent of a special education student at IS 429Q, located at 38-04 48 Street, NYC. Like all parents, I am deeply invested in my child's education and well-being; however, my child's experiences at this school have prompted me to raise serious concerns. The teachers at IS 429Q have shown an alarming lack of commitment to their responsibilities, and it is my child's education and safety that are suffering as a result. This issue is particularly personal to me because my daughter is not only a special education student, but she also has a serious medical condition—gastritis—that requires her to have frequent access to bathroom facilities, yet she is repeatedly denied this basic necessity by her teachers.
Furthermore, my attempts to advocate for her through requesting emergency Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings have been met with resistance and disregard. The indifference is reflected by my daughter who, up until now, has learned nothing substantial in essential subjects, notably math. This is unacceptable, especially considering the substantial funding of $38,000 allocated per child annually to NYC schools.
The ethos of IS 429Q should represent a sanctuary for learning, understanding, and respect, making it imperative that we address these shortcomings immediately. The teachers’ dismissive attitude does not only impede my daughter’s growth but also contributes to a hostile environment where she feels bullied by the very people who are meant to nurture and educate her. This toxic atmosphere is further compounded by the lack of empathy and understanding of her health condition, failing to allow necessary accommodations such as bathroom breaks.
I am urging the New York City Department of Education to take immediate action to investigate these issues at IS 429Q and implement the necessary reforms. This might include re-evaluating teacher performance, providing additional training on special education needs, and ensuring that all staff understand and adhere to the rights of students with medical needs. Specific policies should be enacted to facilitate and expedite IEP meetings upon request as a priority for the well-being of students.
Our children deserve to be treated with respect and given the necessary support to succeed in their academic journey. A comprehensive and respectful approach is necessary to cultivate an inclusive educational environment at IS 429Q. Sign this petition to support the demand for immediate action to protect and enhance the educational experiences of our children at IS 429Q. We must ensure that our students, especially those with special needs, have access to the quality education they deserve.
Together, we can nurture a positive educational setting where every child can thrive. Please sign this petition to call for accountability and reform at IS 429Q.
