Address Insurance Challenges for Amazon Flex Drivers

The Issue

We, the undersigned Amazon Flex drivers, call on Amazon to address the lack of affordable, accessible insurance options for delivery drivers in the UK. The current system for obtaining valid insurance is severely restrictive, forcing many drivers into financial hardship or risking non-compliance

The Problem
While top-up hire and reward insurance is readily available, it is only valid if the driver's primary insurance provider agrees to it. Currently, as far as we know, only three main insurance companies in the UK accept hire and reward as a top-up on their policies. These insurers charge significantly higher premiums, making insurance prohibitively expensive for drivers.

For example, a driver paying £300 per year for a standard policy may face quotes exceeding £1,800 per year to accommodate the hire and reward top-up. This represents a 500% increase in costs. Such a dramatic rise is unsustainable, especially for part-time or low-income drivers who rely on Amazon Flex for supplemental earnings.

This cost burden leaves drivers with few options:

  • Operating uninsured, risking legal and financial consequences.
  • Paying exorbitant insurance premiums, which often consume most of their earnings.
  • Giving up work with Amazon Flex entirely.

Our Requests
We urge Amazon to take the following actions to resolve this issue:

  1. Engage with insurance providers: Work with leading UK insurance companies to expand acceptance of hire and reward top-up insurance across more policies.
  2. Negotiate group discounts: Amazon should negotiate group insurance rates for Flex drivers, ensuring more affordable options are available.
  3. Provide clear guidance: Offer clear and transparent guidance on insurance compliance and assist drivers in finding valid and reasonably priced policies.

Why This Matters
Amazon Flex drivers play a vital role in ensuring timely deliveries and customer satisfaction. However, the current lack of affordable insurance options places undue stress and financial strain on drivers. Addressing this issue will not only protect drivers but also help Amazon retain a reliable, motivated workforce.

Sign this petition to urge Amazon Flex to take immediate action. Together, we can push for fair and affordable insurance solutions for all drivers.
