Address Illegal Mining and Reclaim Lands in Ghana

The Issue

Growing up in our vibrant community, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, on our environment and our people. It’s a heart-wrenching sight to see rich agricultural lands, once lush and thriving, now reduced to barren expanses riddled with dangerous pits and polluted water bodies. These practices have not only eroded the landscape but also put countless lives at risk, leading to tragic losses that could have been avoided.

The consequences of galamsey extend beyond environmental degradation. Vital water bodies, essential for drinking, irrigation, and daily living, have become contaminated and unusable. The community members, whose livelihoods depend largely on farming and fishing, now struggle to meet basic needs, casting a shadow over the economic prospects of the region. This situation calls for immediate and decisive actions to safeguard our remaining resources and restore what has been lost.

We urge the government of Ghana and stake holders to take swift measures to address this critical issue. First, by bringing together the individuals involved in galamsey activities and making it mandatory for them to reclaim the damaged lands. A structured approach, where these individuals are tasked with rehabilitating the ecosystems they have harmed, will not only promote accountability but also foster a sense of responsibility towards sustainable mining practices.

Implementing a point-based assessment system will incentivize these miners to actively participate in land reclamation efforts. By meeting specific environmental rehabilitation standards, they can earn the opportunity to obtain legal mining licenses, encouraging them to transition to regulated and environmentally conscious operations.

This dual approach not only addresses the issue at its source but also provides a realistic pathway for miners to engage in legal and sustainable mining practices. We believe that this strategy will bring long-term benefits to the community, safeguarding our environment, revitalizing agricultural lands, and ensuring the health and prosperity of future generations.
