The Issue

Imagine not being able to enjoy the simple comforts of your own home. This is a reality for many residents of Chippewa Falls, WI due to the excessive noise emanating from Berry Plastics. Personally, I find it impossible to sit peacefully in my yard most days. Even indoors, the noise is so disruptive that I have to keep my windows closed and use white noise machines to mask it. It is a powerful loud siren noise that sounds like a storm siren or recess bell. If it’s not that specific sound then it is a powerful pulsating hum that gives many people headaches after a few minutes outside. I’ve resorted to placing cardboard and sound blankets over the windows, all in the desperate quest for peace and quiet.

The issue is not just personal. The sound levels have been recorded at over 80 decibels from over a mile away, impacting the quality of life for many people across Chippewa Falls. This is not merely an inconvenience—it poses serious health issues. Consistent exposure to noise pollution at this level can lead to hearing impairment, sleep disturbances, and other health problems, as numerous studies have shown. According to the World Health Organization, noises above 70 decibels over a prolonged period can be harmful to human health, affecting both mental and physical well-being. There are noise ordinances in place in Chippewa Falls to protect us from this, but the city is not urgently stepping in.

The vibrant community of Chippewa Falls is built on the enjoyment of the serene natural beauty, the togetherness of neighborhoods, and the shared spaces like parks and yards. This noise intrusion takes a toll on our collective joy and health. We are calling on the local government, specifically our mayor, and Berry Plastics, to take immediate and effective steps to mitigate the factory noise affecting a lot of residents.

Proposed solutions include implementing new noise-reduction technologies and constructing sound barriers at the Berry Plastics facility. Additionally, conducting a comprehensive noise impact assessment and fostering community engagement sessions to address concerns can lead to more sustainable solutions.

Your voice matters. Join us in urging city officials and the management at Berry Plastics to prioritize the well-being of Chippewa Falls residents. Sign this petition to demand urgent action in restoring the peaceful enjoyment of our homes and outdoor spaces.
