Record-breaking heat in the last two weeks of August and the first week of September have created classroom temperatures of 85+ degrees in the majority of the 17 Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) schools without air conditioning. Often these classrooms have 25 or more students who spend upwards of six hours a day in these oppressive temperatures; teachers spend even more hours in these conditions, as they arrive earlier and leave after the students.

These temperatures are prohibitive to learning and teaching, contribute to aggression and misbehaving students, and punish the district’s award-winning faculty by asking them to do their best in an environment few other office-bound professionals would tolerate. We urge the board to find an equitable solution for all impacted schools within the district.

As we understand it, the district has money to add air conditioning to some, but not all, of the schools that do not have it. This ad-hoc approach will exacerbate disparities among schools and is not in alignment with the district’s commitment to excellence. Given the likelihood of hot August temperatures to persist (the Colorado Climate Center has extensive weather data and models that support this) and the district’s mid-August start date, it is imperative that the board find a solution to ameliorate conditions in all impacted schools.

The current process of identifying “priority” schools to receive the approximately $12 million available is short-sighted and will result in resentment, as it will pit schools against one another. More, it simply is not fair. This is a problem that impacts the entire community; the solution must benefit the entire community.

We respectfully ask the district to make public the following information:

• Publish the classroom temperature data being collected at schools without AC on a website available to anyone interested.

• Identify the full cost of adding air conditioning to all of the schools in BVSD that do not currently have it, with the exception of the mountain schools, and release that cost estimate.

• Let the public know how much money is available, both in the general reserve and in the funding from the 2014 bond.

Our goal is your goal: to maintain the excellence of BVSD and continue to produce educated, curious, innovative students.

Thank you for your dedication.
