Address civil rights violations in Azad Jammu and Kashmir
The Issue
The deteriorating political climate in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) needs immediate global attention and intervention. Just recently, a peaceful march to Muzaffarabad has been planned for June 9, 2026, orchestrated by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JK-JAAC), a platform advocating for civil rights. However, on June 5, 2026, the Home Department of the Azad Government of the State of Jammu & Kashmir released an official notification that proscribes the JK-JAAC under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2014. This alarming decision unjustly labels a civil rights advocacy organization as a terror entity, a move that should be challenged as it suppresses democratic freedoms and blinds justice.
The JK-JAAC embodies a coalition of civil rights activists who strive to promote peace and advocate for human rights. Their intention, far from disruptive, is peaceful protest—a fundamental democratic right. Suppressing this march not only violates freedom of assembly but crushes the spirit of democracy which the region is in desperate need of. It is crucial to question: Why should peace advocacy bear the burden of anti-terrorism sanctions without adequate grounds?
The international community, human rights organizations, and advocates for democracy must unite to address this issue immediately. There is an urgent need to revisit the decision to proscribe JK-JAAC and recognize it for what it is—a platform for peace. Restoring its status means uplifting democratic integrity and civil rights principles within AJK and ensuring that such advocacy voices are empowered, not stifled.
We call upon global governance bodies, human rights watchdogs, and international peace organizations to thoroughly investigate the motives behind this proscription. By rallying support internationally, we can preserve the sanctity of civil society's role in peaceful activism. This is not just about one organization—it is about sustaining basic freedoms and fostering genuine dialogue in conflict-sensitive zones.
Join us in urging the review and reversal of the ban on JK-JAAC. Stand with us in defending fundamental human rights in AJK by signing this petition. Your voice matters in reaching the necessary change for justice and democratic peace in the region.
