Address and End Homelessness in Santa Monica

Address and End Homelessness in Santa Monica
The Issue
On the behalf of Lincoln Middle school students, residents of Santa Monica, we write to you today on the growing topic of wealth inequality and homelessness. As middle school students, we see how these issues affect people in our community every day. Santa Monica is known for its beautiful beaches and wealthy residents, but many people who live here are struggling. In Santa Monica alone, over 1,000 people here have no place to eat or sleep, and each day is a struggle for them.
Our proposed solution is to set aside portions of public land near key areas, like recreation centers, public restrooms, or soup kitchens. These designated “safe zones” would provide access to basic needs like shelter, food, and hygiene, while also offering a safer environment for homeless people. This would not only help people in need but also benefit the entire community by making support more organized and accessible. Take for example the homeless town in ???????. There is housing, bathrooms, and a kitchen for homeless people.
Homelessness is not a new issue in California, but it has become much worse in recent years. Due to rising housing costs, inflation, drugs, and expensive housing, more people are being pushed onto the streets and have no place to go. In the 1970s, many families could afford a home, college, and savings. But since then, wages have risen 17%, while costs have skyrocketed: housing has gone up by 400%, health care by 750%, and college by 1,400%. Many now struggle to own a home or pay for everyday items. And LA is almost 50% more expensive than the National average and is ranked the 2nd most expensive city in the US.
