Address abuse and over-sentencing in Alabama prisons

Address abuse and over-sentencing in Alabama prisons
The Issue
My husband is currently serving 17 years for a crime he didn’t commit. His story is not unique in the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). Beyond the unfair sentence, he has faced inhumane treatment, including being beaten to the point of hospitalization and denied essential resources for survival. This is a reality for many incarcerated individuals in Alabama, where neglect and abuse seem to be endemic.
The U.S. Department of Justice released a report in 2019 highlighting that Alabama prisons are overcrowded and riddled with violence, which significantly threatens the lives of inmates. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, Alabama’s prisons rank among the most violent in the country. Over-sentencing contributes to this crisis, with thousands serving disproportionately long terms without access to proper rehabilitation.
ADOC must take immediate action to reform its systems, ensuring the humane treatment of all inmates and reviewing cases with excessive sentences. They should invest in better staff training, improve inmate healthcare, and establish independent oversight to monitor conditions. Reforming sentencing guidelines to align with national standards is also crucial to prevent unjust long-term incarcerations.
I urge the Governor of Alabama and ADOC officials to prioritize these reforms. Every individual deserves fair treatment, humane conditions, and a genuine opportunity for rehabilitation. We cannot ignore the suffering of these human beings any longer.
Please sign this petition to demand justice, safety, and dignity for all incarcerated individuals within Alabama’s prison system. Together, we can amplify the voices of those who need it the most. Here’s OUR story..
My husband was fully violated last week he had a sentence of 20 split 3 for robbery he caught a robbery and assault in the first degree in August of last year he has been incarcerated in the mobile county jail since August 22 2024 he was going to pick a friend of ours up to take her home when he got there his best friend who was like a bother pulled up and like normal siblings often do they start arguing the guy that my husband's brother rode with notices the two of them arguing and gets out of his car and approaches my husband in a fairly aggressive manner that turned into an argument now between my husband and the victim which escalated leading the victim to then
reach to grab something from his pants at the time was believed to be a gun my husband unarmed grabs a tire that was in the yard and throws it and hits the victim just barely and out of nowhere my husband’s brother shoots my husband then in panic starts yelling for his brother to stop his brother then starts pointing his gun at everyone there and shooting 4 or 5 more times towards the ground he has already shot the victim and now he is completely out of hand hunter (my husband ) is trying to calm him down and get him to put the gun down when someone else yells and my husband sees the victim being stabbed by his other friend and takes off towards him to break up the altercation his brother then
yells and my husband sees the victim being stabbed by his other friend and takes off towards him to break up the altercation his brother then points the gun at his girlfriend and tells her to get in the car everyone then gets to kinda running in different directions and both the brother and the friend are demanding my husband to take them away from the scene police show up at some point after that and we receive a call saying that the police were looking for Hunter the next day he was arrested and charged with robbery and assault now his brother has admitted to the shooting which leaves the person that stabbed the victim given my husband and his past
shooting which leaves the person that stabbed the victim given my husband and his past definitely doesn't make ma one want to give benefit of doubt especially when they were arguing in the beginning it looks like my husband is definitely the one that stabbed him but the victim admits he never saw my husband he just assumed it was him because of the event leading up to this we told the detective immediately the name and last known location of the guy responsible for doing the stabbing and as of Tuesday at court they had not even contacted the guy to get his side or any sort of statement for the investigation the police had already made a traffic stop that turned out to
stapping and as of Tuesday at court they had not even contacted the guy to get his side or any sort of statement for the investigation the police had already made a traffic stop that turned out to be the victims stolen car in which the driver was a female accompanied by two other females and a baby they were also the same ones that wrote the statement claiming my husband's involvement the police found the victims missing property on the females and inside of the vehicle but still allowed all three of the women to leave without any further investigation being conducted to my knowledge the DA argued that because my husband had prior criminal charges
the statement claiming my husband's involvement the police found the victims missing property on the females and inside of the vehicle but still allowed all three of the women to leave without any further investigation being conducted to my knowledge the DA argued that because my husband had prior criminal charges similar or alike the ones he just caught grounds for the state to ask for a full violation and because the lawyer we retained took our money and failed to do anything we asked him to do to prove otherwise the judge ruled and he was fully violated to serve the remaining 17 years in prison. He has been jumped and hospitalized he’s denied privileges to communicate with his family denied ignored and lied to/on currently doing 17 years with two charges pending facing life and I’m desperate for help. Hear the truth give him the chance he fought so hard for people change the system is unjust and the furthest thing from safe. It doesn’t protect us it kills us and we have to fight for our loved ones we have to protect what we love and stand up for what we believe police are doing the most killing yet they get away with it daily judges are taking lives away everyday and because they have a degree we are allowing them to continue to do this to our people “legally” it’s not legal it’s not fair it’s not right!! It’s time to stop cops and hush judges
