Add Welsh Language signage on "It's A Small World" in Disneyland Paris
The Issue
Disneyland Paris has long been celebrated for cultural inclusivity and a dedication to creating magical, welcoming environments for all guests. However, there remains an opportunity to further enhance this inclusivity by updating the 'It's a Small World ' attraction to include Welsh language signage. By incorporating Welsh greetings, 'Croeso' (Welcome) at the entrance and 'Hwyl fawr' (Goodbye) at the exit sequence, Disneyland Paris can make Welsh visitors feel truly embraced and acknowledged.
After all the word "Hwyl" in "Hwyl fawr" can mean fun, joy, high spirits, excitement and a deep sense of wellbeing - how much more Disney can you get?!
Inside the ride’s European and UK scenes, guests already encounter a celebration of Welsh culture, beautifully represented by dolls dressed in traditional costume, including the iconic Welsh Ladies. However, while these visual nods to Wales have long been a treasured part of the experience, the language itself is missing.
Now our children are old enough to read they are old enough to notice their language missing from the ride. The excitement of spotting the Welsh Ladies was tinged with just a little bit of dissapointment and confusion - "I thought the ride was about everybody?"
Following the recent addition of Irish language signage (Fáilte and Slán go fóill), a clear precedent has been set for recognizing the distinct Celtic languages and unique cultural identities that make up the European community and the vast visitor base of Disneyland Paris.
Over 885,000 people in Wales speak Welsh, with a goal to reach 1 million by 2050, highlighting the significance of this language to a substantial number of Disneyland Paris' potential visitors. Recognizing Welsh through signage at one of the park's most iconic attractions would send a powerful message that Disney values and appreciates its Welsh-speaking guests.
We urge Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Imagineering to take this meaningful step towards inclusion by adding Welsh language signage to the 'It's a Small World' attraction. This move would align with Disney's values of inclusivity, harmony, and celebrating cultures from around the world.
