Add Romanian language support to Amazon KDP

The Issue

To all Romanian writers and readers!

As an author who is passionate about sharing my work with a global audience, I am deeply invested in the accessibility of literary content. Sadly, Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), a platform praised for democratizing the publishing world, lacks a crucial aspect – the ability for authors to publish in Romanian, both for ebooks and paperbacks. This exclusion is not just about language; it is about the cultural richness and voices that remain unheard due to this barrier.

Amazon KDP is seen as an innovative platform for countless authors around the world. However, by not supporting the Romanian language, it overlooks an important European market and its plethora of unique stories and ideas. With over 24 million Romanian speakers worldwide and a rich literary heritage, the demand for Romanian content is significant. Romanian readers and writers are deprived of the opportunity to engage fully with their own culture and language on a global platform.

Romanian is an important language in Southeastern Europe, with Romania's own publishing market showing a steady growth. Given this, offering Romanian as a language option on KDP is not just a cultural accommodation but a smart business decision for Amazon. It opens doors for both readers and writers, increasing cultural exchange and understanding through books. Everyone who buys a Kindle in Romania first asks: do I find books in Romanian? But the answer right now is: scarcely.

The absence of Romanian as a language option on such a pivotal platform excludes a whole array of voices and stories that contribute to our global narrative. Adding Romanian could enrich Amazon's catalogue with diverse content, offering readers new perspectives and authors the chance to share their authentic voices and stories with the world and other Romanians living abroad.

I urge Amazon KDP to take a progressive step forward by adding Romanian language support. Such a change wouldn't just unlock new commercial avenues but would also honor the commitment to inclusivity and representation. It’s time for Amazon to embrace diversity and allow Romanian writers and readers to participate fully in the global literary conversation.

Sign this petition to ask Amazon KDP to implement Romanian language support, empowering Romanian authors and enriching the literary world.

Example of authors working around this restriction are numerous: they tried clicking on Romansh language instead of Romanian and published some books, but after the metadata problem was detected, their books were erased. Sometimes it happened after one or two volumes in their series so, they were lost in this workaround. It is not a desirable course of action, but people are trying their best.
