Add Portfolio Building to Art and Contemporary Culture I

The Issue

This petition advocates for a portfolio building class. We propose that portfolio building lessons should be merged into the Art and Contemporary Culture I class. This is for two reasons:

1. While the seniors have a portfolio building class for themselves, it is better to tackle portfolio building before the last year of this program. It is hard to change or add things to a portfolio in senior year— art making takes time. A portfolio building class not only helps students create a vision for their art practice but it also helps students have a well thought out portfolio for sophomore summer and junior year. These two years are a critical time for students to get job experience and internships— and many art fields focus more on portfolios than an ‘A’ in Art and Contemporary Culture I. 

2. This petition acknowledges the importance of art theory classes. However, three hour long art theory classes usually taper off in productive thought and discussion around one to two hours in. This petition advocates for turning these last unproductive hours or two into a portfolio building workshop/ class.
