The Issue

In Windsor, Connecticut, our diverse community deserves representation that acknowledges every individual's background. One glaring oversight in the race-related questions of Windsor High School's surveys and questionnaires is the absence of a category for individuals from the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) region.

For decades, MENA communities have been grouped under the "White" category, an inaccurate representation that fails to address their unique cultural, social, and political experiences. According to the Arab American Institute, there are over 3.7 million MENA individuals residing in the U.S., reflective of a significant population whose identity deserves recognition.

The inclusion of MENA as a distinct category in racial and ethnic questions would enhance the accuracy of demographic data, allowing educators and policymakers to better understand and address the needs of all students. This change supports inclusivity and representation, integral to fostering a school environment where every student feels valued and seen.

Many educational institutions across the nation are beginning to acknowledge this need, setting a precedent for recognizing MENA as an essential component of racial and ethnic surveys. Implementing this change at Windsor High School would not only align our school with these progressive policies but also set a standard for other schools in the region.

We call upon the Windsor Board of Education and school administrators to update their survey protocols and include MENA in race-related questions. This adjustment aligns with Windsor’s commitment to diversity and provides an authentic representation for all students. Support our initiative by signing this petition and help us make Windsor High School a leading example of inclusivity.
