The Issue

Growing up in Maharashtra, Marathi was more than just a language to me; it is an integral part of my identity. It is the vessel through which I express my thoughts, dreams, and emotions. However, despite its cultural richness and historical significance, Marathi often does not get the recognition it deserves in public spaces, which disheartens me deeply.

Recently, a new highway was inaugurated connecting New Delhi to Mumbai. While this infrastructure is a triumph in connecting two major cities in India, it falls short on inclusivity. Despite the vast number of Marathi-speaking individuals traveling this route, there is a glaring absence of Marathi language signs along the highway. This oversight sends a troubling message that undermines the linguistic diversity that is emblematic of our nation.

Maharashtra is home to over 83 million Marathi speakers, according to the 2011 Census. It is not just a language but a symbol of our cultural heritage. When public infrastructure projects like highways ignore the language, it alienates a significant number of citizens who take pride in it. More importantly, it contributes to a diminishing sense of belonging among Marathi speakers traversing this major roadway.

Incorporating Marathi language signs alongside Hindi and English ones would not only uphold the dignity of the Marathi-speaking community but also reinforce the ethos of unity in diversity—one of the core values our nation stands for. It would further ensure safer travel for Marathi-speaking commuters who may not be well-versed in other languages and promote inclusivity across linguistic borders.

I urge the authorities responsible for the New Delhi to Mumbai highway project to take immediate action and include Marathi language signs. By doing so, they would be affirming the importance of linguistic diversity and respecting the cultural identity of millions. Please sign this petition if you believe that linguistic respect and inclusivity should be paramount in public transport infrastructure.
