Add Lorry and Coach POV clips to UK hazard perception tests

The Issue

Navigating the bustling streets of London as a Class 1 HGV driver, I face daily challenges that require acute road awareness and an unwavering focus on safety. The perspective from a lorry or coach cab is drastically different from that of a regular car, and the standard hazard perception tests currently used in the UK do not fully prepare drivers for these unique challenges.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) holds the reins when it comes to updating and improving the content of hazard perception theory tests. By incorporating POV clips from lorries and coaches into these exams, we could dramatically enhance the nationwide training of new drivers, ensuring they are better prepared to share the roads safely with larger vehicles.

In 2019 alone, there were over 25,000 accidents involving large goods vehicles in the UK, according to Department for Transport statistics. A significant number of these incidents can be attributed to the lack of understanding and awareness of how larger vehicles operate and the different hazards they face on the roads. Current tests do not adequately cover scenarios that are common in the lives of lorry and coach drivers. For instance, cars often cut in front of lorries, not realizing the stopping distances required for these heavy vehicles, or they drive within blind spots, endangering themselves and others.

By incorporating these specific POV clips, not only will new drivers learn to anticipate the movements and challenges faced by lorries and coaches, but existing drivers taking refresher tests can also update their knowledge base, fostering a safer driving environment for all. This is a tangible step that can be taken quickly and efficiently, given the DVSA's control over test content.

Let us push for a change that has the power to save lives and make the roads safer for everyone. Sign this petition to urge the DVSA to update hazard perception theory tests, making them more comprehensive and reflective of real-world driving conditions. Your signature can make a difference in promoting road safety across the UK. Together, we can drive this change forward.
