The Issue

Every day, I watch as parents push strollers in the street, walking their children to Kingston Elementary School along Kings Grant Rd, Virginia Beach. This situation is not only unsafe but inevitable tragedies waiting to happen. Recently, I witnessed one of my neighbors cycling with his children when he was hit by a car. In another gut-wrenching incident, a neighbor saw a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. We ask ourselves — will it take a fatality for the City to act?

The dangerous condition of Kings Grant Rd & Oxford Dr is undeniable. These roads lack proper pedestrian infrastructure despite being crucial routes for schoolchildren, parents, and residents. Without sidewalks, crosswalks, and proper signs, the safety risk continues to mount. According to the Federal Highway Administration, proper pedestrian infrastructure can reduce accidents by up to 88%. Therefore, immediate improvements are imperative.

Our streets should be safe for all. We propose that the City of Virginia Beach include Kings Grant Rd & Oxford Dr in its next Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) to allocate necessary funds for their renovation. This would not only provide essential sidewalks and crosswalks but also ensure that our community's safety requirements are met. Such infrastructure investment is a proven success for reducing accidents and fostering a more walkable city.

Let's not wait for another accident or, god forbid, a fatality. Sign this petition to urge the Virginia Beach government to prioritize the safety of our children, families, and neighbors by addressing the critical infrastructure needs of Kings Grant Rd & Oxford Dr. Together, we can make a difference and bring positive change to our community. Sign today to protect our streets and ensure a safer tomorrow for everyone.
