I am part of an Ethiopian community where many people use iPhone and Mac devices every day. We read and write using the Ethiopic (Geez) script, which is a vital part of our identity, history, and culture. Despite Apple’s strong commitment to diversity and global inclusion, Geez numerals are not currently available as a system option for clocks on iPhones and Macs. This leaves many of us feeling overlooked, especially when other numeral systems are already supported.

The Geez script is more than 2,000 years old and is a cornerstone of Ethiopian and Eritrean heritage. It is widely used not only in religious contexts, but also in everyday communication by millions of people. Our language and writing system deserve the same recognition and representation on modern technology as other global scripts.

Today, something as simple as checking the time on a phone becomes a reminder that our script is missing from the digital world. Technology should make people feel included, not invisible. When a culture cannot see itself reflected in the tools it uses every day, it creates a sense of exclusion that should not exist in a globally connected world.

I am asking Apple to add Geez (Ethiopic) numerals as a selectable system option for clocks on iPhone and Mac devices. This would be a meaningful step toward cultural inclusion and digital representation for millions of users.

Apple has always been a leader in innovation and accessibility. By supporting Geez numerals, Apple would be honoring one of the world’s oldest living writing systems and reinforcing its commitment to serving all communities.
