Add dog-on-dog attacks to the UK Dangerous Dogs Act

The Issue

My dog has been violently attacked, the same aggressive dog has attacked a lot of dogs in our community, yet each cry for help to the authorities has been met with the frustrating reality that nothing can be done. The current legal framework in the UK, the Dangerous Dogs Act, remains silent on dog-on-dog attacks, leaving many pet owners like myself helpless and our beloved dogs vulnerable.

These distressing encounters are not isolated. Dog-on-dog attacks are on the rise, with hundreds of similar cases being reported across the UK each year. According to data from the RSPCA and various local governments, there is an observable increase in incidents where pets are severely injured or even killed, yet not much changes in terms of actionable responsibility for the offending owner's part.

Our current laws empower the police to act only when a dog poses a threat to humans, neglecting to address obvious aggression against other dogs. This loophole fosters an environment where irresponsible dog owners can repeatedly allow their pets to harm other animals without facing any legal consequences.

To effect real change, we must amend the Dangerous Dogs Act to explicitly include provisions for prosecuting and investigating dog-on-dog attacks. Such an amendment would enable police officers to take preventative measures quickly, thereby deterring future attacks and ensuring a safer environment for all dogs.

Implementing this change in the law serves a dual purpose: It holds negligent dog owners accountable and it protects our pets, who deserve a safe space in which to enjoy their daily walks. This simple yet effective change could prevent countless future attacks and relieve the anxiety that so many of us experience when stepping out for a walk.

Stand with me in urging Parliament to amend the Dangerous Dogs Act to include regulations concerning dog-on-dog attacks. Together, we can protect our beloved pets and create a more secure and responsible community. Please sign this petition and share our crucial cause with your networks. Together, we have the power to make a difference. Your signature counts.
