The issue

The evolution of South Australia's disability sector has brought with it significant changes, including the formal recognition of "Disability Team Leader" as a unique occupation by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (OSCA 422232). This recognition sets apart the role of leading people and services from that of frontline disability support workers, underscoring the necessity for specialized leadership capabilities within the sector.

Currently, many disability organisations, especially not-for-profits, bear the burden of funding leadership programs themselves. This often leads to financial constraints that can compromise the quality and accessibility of essential leadership training. Without the systematic support of Skills SA and the government’s subsidized training frameworks, there's a risk that our leaders will lack the comprehensive skills and confidence needed to spearhead effective and compassionate disability services.

The 11461NAT Diploma of Leadership in Disability Services is a specialized course designed to fill this gap. It is a program tailored to equip leaders with the insights and skills needed to navigate the complex challenges within the sector, transforming them into advocates, strategists, and innovators committed to delivering high-quality services.

Inclusion of this diploma on the Skills SA Subsidised Training List is not just about enabling individuals; it's about empowering entire communities by building a robust framework of skilled leaders who can foster environments where those with disabilities thrive. It is essential to recognize that leadership training is an investment in the future of the sector, promising improved service outcomes, job satisfaction among workers, and greater organizational efficiency.

We urge the South Australian Government and Skills SA to acknowledge the critical role of leadership in the disability sector by subsidizing the 11461NAT Diploma of Leadership in Disability Services. This step would not only align with the government's commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive society but also ensure that the disability sector is equipped to meet the increasing demands and expectations placed upon it.

Join us in advocating for this crucial change. Your support can amplify our call for a more equitable and sustainable approach to training in the disability sector. Sign the petition to bring about this vital transformation for South Australia’s disability services.
