Every day as I navigate my commute, I witness an all-too-common tragedy at the REM Pointe Claire. I have to take this bus and REM route, but I've seen firsthand the needless harm caused to birds by the station's reflective windows. These windows, especially those facing the beautiful Fairview Forest, inadvertently create the illusion of a natural haven for the birds. The glass acts like a mirror, reflecting the forest and sky, thereby misleading birds to believe they are flying into open space, resulting in devastating collisions.  Federal laws mandate that windows must be bird proofed.

Birds play a crucial role in our ecosystem as pollinators, seed dispersers, and controllers of pests. Their declining populations can have cascading effects on our environment. Unfortunately, up to one billion birds die each year in North America due to collisions with glass. However, we can make a real difference in this situation.  Please contact the REM.

One simple, effective, and proven solution is the application of visible decals on the windows. Research has shown that strategically placed decals and patterns create visual cues that prevent bird strikes by breaking up reflections and alerting birds to the presence of glass. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and other conservation bodies have reported that putting decals on windows can reduce bird collisions by up to 90%.

Implementing this solution at the REM Pointe Claire station would not only preserve local bird populations but also uphold Pointe Claire's commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity. It's an actionable step that aligns with ongoing conservation efforts and enhances the safety and integrity of the local ecosystem.
