Add Cameos to South Park for the Mole, Gregory & More!
The Issue
This is an open letter to the Animation Department at South Park Studios. I hope you guys can find the time to read this and take it into consideration.
Countless South Park fans are aware of the show's famous hidden visitors, which can be found hidden in unexpected places throughout episodes of the show across countless seasons, most famously by animation director and producer Eric Stough. What is less well-known is how many episodes also feature characters from the show's older or more iconic episodes making cameo appearances in montages and crowds, such as the anti-bullying video in "Butterballs", opening of Whole Foods in "The City Part of Town", the bike parade in "Bike Parade" and celebrating vaccinations in the "South ParQ Vaccination Special", the latter featuring adults and animals from throughout the show. For the most observant and dedicated fans, these scenes can be fun - seeing how many characters we can recognize, looking for old favorites, or simply who is the most obscure or out of place. Even if these characters aren't contributing to a storyline, it means a lot to some of us just to see them. In my long time in this community, I've talked to hundreds of fans of the show and read thousands of posts and I cannot stress how much joy these little moments can bring to fans, especially autistic and neurodivergent fans.
While many of us love the cameo-heavy scenes with adult characters, the real heart of the show is the kids - in my experience, practically every one-time or background kid has someone, somewhere, who absolutely thinks they're the coolest! Whether it's a common background character like Brimmy, an easter egg character like Damien, one of a few sightings of Kelly from "Rainforest Shmainforest", these moments bring fans together. Many fans, especially on social media and the wiki, love to trade notes on these scenes, such as when Kevin and Red used to be seen at lunch together or Mark Cotswolds' scattered few appearances. Other fans express hope they may see that special cameo they've waited for. There's a post floating around shared by hundreds of fans suggesting a more common background character seen from behind is a cameo by Gregory of Yardale from "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut", and all of them are delighted with the idea he is still out there, even though it seems to be a different background character, Bobby Palmer.

While nobody is sure whether these decisions are made by individual animators or approved by producers, these non-speaking cameo appearances are canon all the same to so many fans. I have personally always been really impressed over the years with how much passion and creativity among fans these characters inspire, even for characters I wasn't as interested in. I know seeming some of those faces has brightened many people's days. These moments allow fans to imagine richer inner lives just off-screen for these characters and let the South Park universe feel bigger. We all want the team to know how much we love and appreciate this part of the show.

The undersigned specifically hope to see and request to see the characters Gregory of Yardale and the Mole from "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" during an episode in the 26th season, in the background -- whether they are on the playground, at an assembly, together or in separate locations, seeing them in any new capacity within the show is our primary goal. They are some of the most popular one-time characters in the fandom's history and the subject of significant fan art, cosplay, fanfiction and fan animations, more than twenty years after their debut in the film, including cosplayers at the South Park 20th Anniversary Concert event.
There is additional high interest in seeing the characters Thomas from 'Le Petit Tourette', Kelly from 'Rainforest Shmainforest', Mark and Rebecca Cotswolds from 'Hooked on Monkey Phonics', Lizzy from 'Cartman's Silly Hate Crime', Josh Myers from 'Toilet Paper', Gary Harrison from 'All About the Mormons?', Bradley from "Cartman Sucks", Thad Jarvis from "Guitar Queer-o", Tammy Warner from 'The Ring', as well as especially the dearly missed Pip - any of these characters appearing again for even one frame of animation would be noticed and widely appreciated by fans. There is also a lot of love for Damien, Bridon Gueermo, Terrance Mephesto, Jason White, Brimmy, and Dogpoo.
We are not seeking to change the show's writing but only to express our thankfulness for these easter eggs and elevate some hopes for those in the newest season of our favorite show! Viva la resistance!
