The Issue

Recently, while working in the healthcare sector, I encountered a patient who required a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter. This experience was eye-opening; it made me realize that despite my linguistic skills, I knew more French than BSL. This discrepancy highlighted a critical gap in our educational system — one that leaves many unable to communicate with the profoundly deaf community in their native language.

In Scotland, approximately 1 in 6 people live with some degree of hearing loss, and more than 12,000 people use BSL as their preferred language. Despite these numbers, BSL is not given its rightful place in our schools' curriculum. Instead, foreign languages such as French and German are prioritized. While learning foreign languages is valuable, BSL is critical for creating a more inclusive and understanding society.

Understanding and being able to communicate with the deaf community should not be limited to those who seek it as a speciality or profession but should be a fundamental part of our basic education. By incorporating BSL into the curriculum, we help bridge the communicative gap and foster a more inclusive environment for all.

Implementing BSL before languages like German and French will enable all children in Scotland to grow up understanding and respecting the needs and rights of the deaf community. Not only will this promote inclusivity, but it will also expand young people's minds by exposing them to diverse ways of communication and understanding.

Sign this petition to urge the Scottish Government to prioritize the integration of British Sign Language in schools. By doing so, we take one step closer to a community where everyone has a voice and nobody is left unheard.
