Add ASL classes to Ames High School curriculum

Add ASL classes to Ames High School curriculum
The Issue
I began my journey learning American Sign Language (ASL) when my friends and I started a small club, guided by a generous teacher, one of my friend's grandmothers. We surpassed her teaching ability in no time because of our enthusiasm and the potential we realized in ASL. Now, our passion drives us to seek more formal learning opportunities at Ames High School.
Imagine a world where communication barriers are broken, where inclusivity is not an afterthought but a proactive value. By introducing ASL classes at Ames High School, we not only empower students with valuable communication skills, but also prepare them better for diverse career opportunities. Did you know that the demand for ASL interpreters is expected to grow by 19% over the next decade, far faster than the average for other occupations? This means our students will have an undeniable advantage in the job market if they have this skill.
Moreover, learning a new language like ASL is a tonic for the brain. Studies show that bilingual individuals possess superior cognitive abilities compared to monolinguals, from problem-solving skills to memory retention and even multi-tasking. ASL, with its unique visual-spatial learning elements, offers an exciting brain workout. For students who excel visually, or just want to embrace a different learning modality, ASL is the perfect fit.
One of the most meaningful impacts of implementing ASL in our curriculum is fostering inclusivity. Should a Deaf student join Ames High, they should not feel isolated from their classmates. With ASL, we can create an inclusive environment where all students can freely communicate and engage with one another, showing that Ames High truly values diversity and equal opportunities for everyone.
Join me in making this dream a reality by signing this petition to add American Sign Language classes to the Ames High School curriculum. Together, we can create a more inclusive, skilled, and prepared student body, ready to meet the challenges of the future with open minds and open hearts. Sign now to inspire change!
