The nonprofit behind the SAT, a test that colleges use to judge incoming applicants, just announced that it is rolling out their “adversity scores” to a wider audience.

The adversity score is an “overall disadvantage level” that scores students on a scale of 1 to 100 based on the level of adversity they face in terms of social and economic factors associated with a student’s school and neighborhood.

The formula includes median family income, crime reports, housing circumstances, college attendance rates and parental education.

Critics of standardized testing have long pointed out the correlations between test scores and family income.

The College Board hopes to give admissions officers a more comprehensive picture of a student’s background that goes further than just a number on a test.

While improvements still need to be made to the new SAT dashboard and scoring system, it’s a first step that many are excited about potentially leveling the playing field for those applying to colleges.

The ACT should follow in the SAT’s footsteps and start the adversity score program. Students from different backgrounds deserve to have the same shot at going to college.
