I am a victim of domestic violence and stalking from my offender. He pled guilty to stalking. Despite this conviction, we still live in the same town, and I often find myself frequenting places near him for my shopping and doctor's appointments. When he was sentenced, the prosecuting attorney assured me that I would be informed if my stalker changed or acquired a new vehicle. This was supposed to help me stay vigilant and aware if he was ever nearby in his new vehicle.

However, months later, I discovered completely by accident that he had purchased a new car. Shocked and concerned, I reached out to his probation officer only to discover that, contrary to what I had been led to believe, there was no legal requirement for my stalker to report his new vehicle. This realization has left me feeling vulnerable and unprotected, and I believe that this is a gap in our justice system that must be addressed.

Stalking is a serious crime that leaves victims living in fear and anxiety. Current laws do not sufficiently protect victims from potential harm, especially in cases where a known and convicted stalker can change vehicles without notification. This loophole can severely compromise a victim's sense of safety and ability to avoid unwanted encounters with their stalker.

I am urging lawmakers to enact legislation that requires convicted stalkers to report any vehicle they own or acquire, along with any subsequent changes, to the authorities. This requirement should be communicated promptly to the victims, helping them maintain a safer environment.

Such a law would not only empower victims but also facilitate better monitoring by law enforcement. It is crucial for our justice system to evolve with clear protocols that uphold victims' rights to safety and peace of mind.
