Add a stop sign or speed bumps at the crosswalk on W Fourth Street for pedestrian safety
The Issue
At least four pedestrians attending The University of Southern Mississippi have been struck by passing vehicles on the crosswalk connecting the main campus to the Century Park North dormitories on West Fourth Street. Three pedestrians were struck by vehicles during the spring semester, and one was recently struck on August 25, 2025. Many students, faculty, staff, and other pedestrians use this crosswalk on a daily basis and fear using it due to people being struck. The students, faculty, staff, and other pedestrians who use this crosswalk want a stop sign, speed bumps, or something to slow down traffic better than what is currently in place. The university has already put up signs along with the pedestrian lights that are already there, and they have not worked. The City of Hattiesburg needs to put an end to pedestrians getting hurt on this crosswalk while going to school or work at The University of Southern Mississippi.
