Add a Pregnancy Safe Icon to Food, Cosmetics, and OTC Drugs

Add a Pregnancy Safe Icon to Food, Cosmetics, and OTC Drugs
The Issue
Every day, millions of people go through pregnancy trying to make the best choices for their health and their baby’s future. But when they pick up a bottle of vitamins, a protein drink, or an over-the-counter medication, they’re often met with silence or vague warnings like “consult your doctor”—and no clear answer about whether the product is safe to use while pregnant.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
We are calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Congress to require a standardized pregnancy-safety icon on the packaging of food, dietary supplements, personal care products, and over-the-counter drugs.
Just like we already have allergen warnings and “heart healthy” labels, consumers should be able to see at a glance whether a product is:
✅ Generally Recognized as Safe During Pregnancy
⚠️ Use With Caution During Pregnancy
❌ Not Recommended During Pregnancy
Pregnant individuals are not just consumers—they are caregivers making vital health decisions every day. Yet the current lack of consistent labeling leaves many confused, overwhelmed, or even at risk.
This issue affects everyone—parents, partners, doctors, and caregivers alike. It’s a simple step that would improve maternal health outcomes, empower informed decision-making, and bring much-needed transparency to a growing wellness and supplement industry.
Other countries, like Australia, already use pregnancy safety categories for medications. It’s time for the U.S. to catch up and do even better by adding a clear, visual tool that anyone can understand.
We urge the FDA and Congress to:
Create standardized pregnancy-safety labeling requirements
Develop an icon-based system based on medical and scientific guidelines
Require manufacturers to clearly disclose known risks—or lack of data—on the front of product packaging
This is a small regulatory change that can make a huge difference in the lives of millions of families.
Sign now to demand clear labeling, safer products, and greater trust for every person navigating pregnancy.
