Southern Oregon University has had a Native American Studies Program for over 25 years. We have a minor and certificate in Native American Studies but have never been afforded the opportunity to have a major in the field of study. Students and faculty alike have been wanting a major in this field for a while now, especially as other larger schools have been developing theirs. Southern Oregon University is known in the community for being one of the first schools on the west coast to have a Native American Studies Program, so for us to not have a major in the field is disheartening. The results of this petition will be presented directly to our newest President of the University (Rick Bailey) and the education board in hopes it will change their mind about not having a major in Native American Studies.
