Add a crosswalk from York Street to Shakespearean Gardens

Add a crosswalk from York Street to Shakespearean Gardens
The Issue
The City of Stratford's Transportation Master Plan (2023) currently does not include a much-needed crosswalk from York Street across Huron Street to Shakespearean Gardens. As a resident of Stratford, this omission raises serious concerns, particularly regarding the safety of pedestrians in our community.
Though the City suggests that pedestrians use the path under the bridge, many aren't aware of it while others take the quicker path across the street - human nature.
There are compelling reasons to prioritize the establishment of a crosswalk at this location:
Firstly, the safety of students who attend Stratford Intermediate School must be a priority. Many of these students frequent establishments downtown during lunch breaks, such as Jenn and Larry's and Mr. Kim's Sushi, both on York Street, creating a high foot traffic during certain hours of the day. A crosswalk would provide them with a safer route, mitigating the risks associated with crossing a busy street like Huron.
Secondly, the presence of a bus stop at the entrance to Shakespearean Gardens adds to the pedestrian activity in the area. Providing a crosswalk here would ensure that those using public transportation, often children, seniors, and tourists, can cross the street safely.
Lastly, we can't overlook the safety of tourists who frequently use the crossing. Many are unfamiliar with the fast pace of vehicles navigating the curve from Ontario Street to Huron Street, making this a particularly dangerous crossing point.
Adding a crosswalk at this location is not merely a suggestion but a necessity. A crosswalk would slow down traffic and make drivers more aware of pedestrians, significantly enhancing safety. It's an actionable, concrete solution that could prevent potential accidents and tragedies.
When a pedestrian clicks on the crosswalk button, it would activate two flashing lights - at the crosswalk and at a light on Ontario Street - to alert drivers coming quickly around the bend.
We urge the City of Stratford to incorporate the addition of a crosswalk from York Street across Huron Street to Shakespearean Gardens in the Transportation Master Plan without delay.
