Stop Captivity of Animals in Yola Zoo

Stop Captivity of Animals in Yola Zoo
The Issue
Just north east of Nigeria in Yola, Adamawa State is home to an abandoned zoo. Due to years of neglect and decay of infrastructure, the zoo attracts locals and curiosity seekers. The conditions of the animals are bad with overgrown weeds and bushes, rusting cages, deteriorating habitats and receive next to no attention. There is no bedding for the animals or protection from the cold and heat. Many of the them are locked in small cages that prevent them from doing many of the things that are natural and important to them, such as running, roaming, flying, choosing a mate, and being with others of its kind. Crocodiles at the zoo live in deplorable conditions without proper care or food. Some birds in captivity have had their wings broken off possibly by one of the zookeepers and are immobilized. The zoo has played the conservation angle for far too long. The animals appear overly aggressive and timid possibly due to starvation. They don’t receive regular veterinary care even when they are ill, most of them have crusty, oozing eyes, raging ear infections, mange that have turned their skin into a mass of red scabs as well abscessed feet from concrete floors. Observed monkeys circle frantically in their small cages, pacing back and forth, oblivious to anything around them as their only way of coping with despair. They have been forgotten by time and should therefore be set free to live their remaining life. It is not ok to keep animals in captivity very much from home if they are to be treated in such a way. No animal should be plucked from its natural habitat so that it could be made to be an entertainment spectacle. I therefore plead with you to help me free these animals.
