AMC CEO Adam Aron, Please Host an Open Caption (On-Screen Subtitles) Screening

AMC CEO Adam Aron, Please Host an Open Caption (On-Screen Subtitles) Screening

The Issue

In Fall 2021, AMC rolled out an open caption (on-screen subtitles) program in selected theaters. At the time, AMC said it would cover 240 theaters. (About 40%, which means that most of their theaters do not offer open captions, though approximately 270 now offer open captions). AMC CEO Adam Aron tweeted that he was “proud” of this open caption program.

Aron has been hosting opening week screenings of movies at theaters around the country. However, he has never hosted an open caption screening! This petition calls on AMC CEO Adam Aron to demonstrate his support of open captions by hosting an open caption screening.

AMC just released a video promoting open captions, featuring a deaf young actress from the upcoming movie "Creed III." Yet there are no plans to have Aron host an open captioned screening of Creed III.

Why should AMC CEO Adam Aron host an open caption screening? Open captions benefit deaf and hard of hearing people, people learning English as a second language, and people with autism, attention deficit disorder, or noise sensitivity. Open captions also benefit children learning to read. And, many younger people today prefer subtitles.

Thus far this year, Aron has hosted at these theaters, most of which also offer open caption screenings:

AMC UTC 14 (April 20, 2023)
AMC Boston Common  (April 9, 2023)
AMC Southcenter 16 (March 5, 2023)
AMC Livonia (March 3, 2023)
AMC 9+CO 10 (February 15, 2023)
AMC Concord Mills (February 16, 2023)
AMC Dine-in Desert Ridge (February 10, 2023)
