ADA in Action
The Issue
Growing up, I’ve had countless unforgettable moments with my best friend Lauren. However, there have been too many instances where our time together was hindered by the lack of accessibility in Corona. As a wheelchair user, navigating the streets should be straightforward, but it often feels like I’m embarking on an impossible journey. From uneven sidewalks to a lack of ramps and accessible entrances in many establishments, I’ve faced challenges that make simple outings exhausting and demoralizing.
This isn’t just a personal challenge; it’s an issue that affects many others in our community. Parents with strollers, elderly residents, and anyone with mobility challenges experience similar obstacles. Everyone deserves to enjoy the beauty and vitality of Corona without unnecessary hindrances.
Every person should be able to navigate their community safely and confidently. Ensuring accessible infrastructure isn't just about compliance with laws or regulations; it’s about fundamentally valuing every community member's right to participate in public life fully.
Statistics from the CDC show that about 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability, highlighting the significant portion of the population that may face similar challenges. Additionally, the WHO estimates that more than 1 billion people worldwide experience some form of disability. These numbers underscore the urgent need for action.
Our request is straightforward and actionable:
1. **Enhance Infrastructure**: Invest in creating more wheelchair-friendly sidewalks, and improve public ramps and accessible entrances to businesses around Corona.
2. **Regular Maintenance**: Ensure that all existing accessibility features, such as ramps and elevators, are regularly inspected and maintained.
3. **Community Engagement**: Engage with disability advocates, community members, and local businesses to gather input and work together towards a more accessible Corona.
We urge local government authorities and business owners to prioritize accessibility improvements. Investing in these changes not only makes our town more welcoming for everyone, but also demonstrates a genuine commitment to inclusivity.
Please support this petition for a more accessible and welcoming Corona. Sign today to ensure every member of our community is valued and able to enjoy their surroundings with ease.
