ADA Accountability in HCPS
ADA Accountability in HCPS
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents, guardians, advocates, and community members, are coming together because multiple families throughout Hillsborough County Public Schools have experienced similar concerns involving the treatment, protection, and accommodation of students with disabilities.
Families from different schools and backgrounds have reported repeated issues involving:
- Failure to properly implement IEP and 504 accommodations
- Concerns being dismissed or minimized by school administration
- Inadequate responses to bullying involving disabled students
- Retaliation or fear of retaliation after advocating for children
- Lack of accountability and transparency
- Emotional, educational, and physical harm impacting vulnerable students
Many parents have felt isolated, unheard, or discouraged from speaking out. However, as more families connect, a troubling pattern has begun to emerge.
This petition exists to demonstrate that these concerns are not isolated incidents affecting only one student or one school. Multiple families across HCPS have reported experiencing similar failures and are asking for meaningful action, oversight, and reform.
We are requesting:
- An independent review of disability-related complaints within HCPS
- Increased accountability regarding ADA, Section 504, and IEP compliance
- Stronger anti-bullying enforcement for students with disabilities
- Mandatory staff and administrator training regarding disability protections and parent rights
- Safe reporting channels for families without fear of retaliation
- Greater transparency and communication between schools and parents
- District-level oversight to ensure students receive legally required accommodations and protections
This petition is not intended to attack teachers or staff members. Our goal is to protect students, support families, and ensure all children receive the safe and equitable education they are entitled to under federal and state law.
No family should feel alone when advocating for a child with disabilities.
Together, we are asking HCPS leadership to listen, investigate, and take meaningful corrective action.
