Keep Track & Field Athletics at Wentworth LC, Hexham
0 have signed. Let’s get to 2,500!
Active Northumberland manage the Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham. This is a multi sport/leisure facility for the community of West Northumberland. It caters for a wide range of activities from athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fitness/gym, football, volleyball, badminton, dance/ballet, tenpin bowling and even antique fayres!!!
The facility is owned by Northumberland County Council and the synthetic athletics track was opened in 1996. Tynedale Harriers & Athletic Club have used this facility since forming in the late 1970's. The club has over 300 members and they range from 11yrs old to 70+ years of age. With many 8-11 year olds also training with coaches that feed into the club.
The club is campaigning to make sure the Leisure Centre continues to provide track and field facilities for those who currently access the facility. This includes the primary/middle and High Schools from Allendale to Ponteland, athletics clubs in the region, Born4Running coaching sessions, Team Decathlon camps, and all the members of Tynedale Harriers who access this facility each week.
The proposal is to turn the grass field into an astroturf football facility - this would mean Tynedale Harriers would no longer have a facility to train at or stage competitions (currently Northern T&F league Div 2E/NE Youth Development League), the international decathlon/heptathlon staged annually would no longer take place and the many school sessions and county championships would not take place.
The outdoor facility caters for football and athletics at the moment, the astroturf would allow the Centre to hire it out for football only - to the cost of athletics.
WE HOPE YOU CAN SIGN THIS PETITION TO KEEP THE MULTI USE FACILITY - WITH A GRASS FIELD FOR BOTH ATHLETICS AND FOOTBALL.
