Active Cooling System in Ola Electric Scooter
The Issue
On August 15 2021, Ola Electric promised us a truly uncompromising electric scooter. In an incident reported on March 27, a dark blue Ola Electric S1 Pro scooter parked on the sides of Porwal road in the Lohegaon area of Pune caught fire. “We are aware of the incident in Pune that happened with one of our scooters and are investigating to understand the root cause, and will share more updates in the next few days,” said the company in a statement tweeted by Ola Electric CEO and co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal at the time. Ola Electric scooters have been rushed in record time and it is not necessarily a good thing. In recent days, we have seen Pluto, Okinawa and Ola Electric scooters catching fire but guess which performance scooter hasn't caught fire in last couple of years and has beaten Indian heat conditions, Ather 450X. The clear difference is presence of active cooling system.
Presence of active cooling system not only enables user to not only extract the maximum performance out of the vehicle but it is essential part of safety system of an EV. Ola doesn't have lithium phosphorous battery that is much more safer but the kind of battery used by Ola Electric is currently prone to fire and thermal runaway. On top of that, Ola Electric software based data benchmarks like battery percentage, speedometer and odometer data also aren't very accurate. That also suggests rush in making a good battery management system. Finally, absence of any active cooling system in such a high performance scooter makes this scooter into a ticking timebomb in Indian summers.
So, this petition is for Ola Electric to improve existing software systems that affect safety of scooter and run it through rigorous testing and recall all the existing Ola Scooters on road to install an active cooling system. This will not only save lives of people running this risky scooter but will also help build public trust on safety concerns of electric vehicles.
