Activate Vacant Lot With Art All Night
The Issue
The Issue
For nearly a decade, the former diner property at Connecticut Avenue and Morrison Street has sat vacant at the heart of Chevy Chase, DC. What was once a gathering place for neighbors has become an empty lot, contributing little to the vibrancy of our commercial corridor despite its prime location in the center of the community.
This fall, Chevy Chase Main Street hopes to transform this long-vacant space into a centerpiece of Art All Night, a citywide celebration of arts, culture, music, and community. The lot presents a unique opportunity to create an outdoor gathering space featuring local artists, performers, interactive activities, and family-friendly programming that would bring hundreds of residents and visitors together while showcasing the creativity and vitality of our neighborhood.
Unfortunately, despite numerous conversations and our willingness to address concerns, we have not yet received permission from the property owners to utilize the space for this one-night community event.
Our organization is prepared to manage the activation responsibly. We carry comprehensive event insurance, have extensive experience producing large-scale public events, and would ensure the property is protected before, during, and after the event. The activation would be temporary, professionally managed, and designed to benefit both the community and the surrounding businesses.
Why This Matters
Art All Night is about celebrating community, creativity, and connection. The former diner lot has the potential to become a vibrant gathering place, even if only for a single evening, demonstrating what is possible when underutilized spaces are opened for public benefit.
After nearly ten years of sitting empty, this property represents an opportunity to create something positive and memorable for residents, support local artists and businesses, and bring new energy to our neighborhood.
How You Can Help
We are asking community members to sign this petition and encourage the property owners to allow the temporary use of the former diner lot for Art All Night.
Your signature demonstrates that the community values creative placemaking, supports activating long-vacant spaces, and wants to see this important corner of Chevy Chase contribute to neighborhood life once again.
Together, we can show the property owners that there is broad community support for transforming this vacant lot into a welcoming space for art, culture, and connection.
Sign today and help bring Art All Night to the former diner lot.
