Action: Put "Snake" Jumping worms on Ontario Prohibited Invasive Species List immediately

The Issue

Whereas the invasive species Amynthas Agrestis has transformed woodlands throughout the US, demolishing nutrient-rich forest floors while leaving forest ecosystems severely compromised and changed in appearance, and given that Amythas agrestis (Snake worms, Jumping worms) appear on species ID apps such as inaturalist not only in Ontario but moving closer to Algonquin Park and the edge of northern boreal forests, we demand that the Ontario government immediately add Amynthas Agrestis (Snake worms, Jumping worms, known to anglers by a variety of other names) to Ontario's Prohibited and Restricted Invasive Species list. Furthermore we request that the Ontario government in cooperation with anglers and provincial park outfitters act swiftly in protection of Ontario’s northern forests and our multimillion dollar park tourism industry to implement both signage and stations at all Algonquin Park gates and other provincial park gates allowing tourists to easily disinfect their footware with an alcohol spray and boot brush stations with a fiber catchment mat before entering the park, which is the only measure required to effectively stop the spread of tread-borne Snake worm cocoons into Ontario park regions and northern boreal forest areas. As tread-borne cocoons and the use of Snake worms by anglers are the main entry points to Ontario's boreal forests these very simple measures could massively protect Ontario’s boreal. Finally we request that the Ontario government explore a planting program of indigenous species such as Buffaloberry which has a saponic element potentially deterrent to Jumping Worms and to fund and support research that controls this invasive through exclusively natural means wherever possible while enhancing the role of indigenous plant species and the protection of those species endangered by this invasive.
Snake worms are already on the prohibited invasive species list in American states such as New York, Minnesota and Wisconsin and they do not have the expansive boreal forests of Ontario. We demand the Ontario government place invasive species Amythas Agrestis (Snake worms, Jumping worms) on Ontario’s prohibited invasive species list immediately.
