Act Now to Protect the Heart of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains!
The Issue
Nestled in the heart of Colorado’s ski country lies the state’s Continental Divide—a haven for outdoor recreation and wildlife. The Continental Divide Wilderness and Recreation Act (H.R. 2554), introduced in the House of Representatives, would safeguard about 58,000 acres of the White River National Forest as wilderness and provide other protections.
This region is home to incredible lands and waters that are at risk from the pressures of growth and development, which could threaten the area’s clean water, wildlife, and booming outdoor recreation economy. The legislation would preserve important wildlife habitat and watersheds while enhancing opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as fishing, backcountry skiing, mountain biking, hiking, snowshoeing, and hunting.
What’s more, local supporters are advocating for the preservation of Camp Hale, a military training site, as a National Historic Landscape in part of a broader effort to protect the Continental Divide region. Camp Hale operated from 1942 to 1965 to prepare soldiers for winter combat and mountain training. Some of the veterans who served in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II returned there and established many of today’s world-famous Colorado ski resorts.
PLEASE URGE SENATOR MICHAEL BENNET AND SENATOR CORY GARDNER TO PROTECT COLORADO’S CONTINENTAL DIVIDE.
The legislation would preserve Camp Hale as a National Historic Landscape while creating wilderness areas in the Williams Fork Mountains, Tenmile Range, and Hoosier Ridge and would expand the Holy Cross, Eagles Nest, and Ptarmigan Peak wilderness areas. It would also create a special management area within the Tenmile Range to protect world-class mountain biking, hiking, and wildlife watching.
Take action to protect Colorado’s Camp Hale and Continental Divide wild lands today!
