Act now to protect children from risky features and addictive design online
The Issue
The Government must act now to protect children from risky features and addictive design online.
Too many of the apps and platforms our children use every day were not built with their safety and wellbeing in mind. They were built to keep them scrolling, watching and coming back for more.
That leaves families dealing with the consequences. As parents, we are at our wits' end.
This isn't a parenting problem, it’s the result of deliberate choices made by some of the world's most powerful and profitable companies: choices that prioritise engagement over the welfare of children.
Some features can put children at direct risk like strangers being able to contact them, disappearing messages, and live location sharing. Others, like endless scrolling, autoplay and constant notifications, are designed to keep them online for longer.
Parents are doing what we can, but we shouldn’t be left to carry this burden alone.
The Government is currently deciding how to keep children safe online. Their consultation runs until 26 May, so the window to act is now. We need your support to help influence what they do.
Will you join us to call on the Government to stand up to Big Tech by:
- ending risky features for children — such as livestreaming functions that expose children to unknown users, nude image sharing, unsafe location sharing, contact from strangers and disappearing messages
- calling time on addictive design — including public like counts, streaks, infinite scrolling, autoplay of videos and push notifications
- putting children's safety and wellbeing first — new laws should require companies to prove that any products and services used by children are safe by design and age-appropriate
Children deserve better. Parents deserve better. We all deserve better.
The time to act is now.
