Stop the Holiday Inn tower! Preserve mandatory building heights in Glebe Park precinct

The issue

The Crowne Plaza’s owner is proposing to build a 14-storey Holiday Inn Express Hotel in the tiny car park enclosed by a circular driveway at the front of the block. This will be a disaster for the Canberra environment!

The hotel’s precinct has a mandatory nine-storey height restriction. The owner, a global fund manager, wants this changed, which will open up the floodgates for this beautiful area! It is all profit for them, nothing for the community and a heavy loss for locals.

The massive vertical bulk would overwhelm beautiful Glebe Park and the streetscape, changing it forever. The tower would have devastating impacts on hundreds of apartment owners and buildings particularly in Binara and Allara Streets. It is unjust and unreasonable that so many Canberrans should suffer an environmental and financial loss so that an out-of-town company can make money. There would be no parking for 238 rooms, no public amenity, horrific waste disposal issues, severe traffic congestion, serious road, bike and pedestrian impacts and extreme wind tunnel effects. Canberra deserves better than this ill-planned proposal.

We call on the ACT government to reject the proposed 14-storey Holiday Inn Express Hotel in front of the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

We also call on the government to reject any variation to the Crown Lease that would allow a building higher than nine storeys on the site.

As a minimum, we insist that any building proposed for the Crowne Plaza site (City Block 21 Section 65 – 1 Binara Street, Canberra) must:

  1. Be less than nine storeys
  2. Blend in with Glebe Park
  3. Be built of non-reflective materials in entirety (similar to the buildings in Campbell Park)

Why I started this petition

I love living in Canberra’s city centre and spending time in Glebe Park. I care about the community.

If you live in Canberra, please sign this petition and encourage everyone in your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours to do the same. Please do everything you can to spread the word, so that we can show the level of opposition to this development. Thank you very much!
