Act Before the Next Attack: Fix the Gaps That Failed Bondi

The issue

Australians are still reeling from the Bondi Beach shooting.

Before that, we were told similar things after the Lindt Cafe siege.

Each time, the explanation sounds the same:

“They were known to authorities, but not considered an imminent threat.”

When warning signs exist and people can still legally access weapons, that explanation no longer feels acceptable especially when lives are lost.

In the Bondi Beach case, the attack involved a father and son acting together, despite reports that at least one of them had been known to intelligence agencies years earlier. This has raised serious and reasonable concerns about gaps between intelligence warnings and real preventative action.

This petition is not about blaming communities, religions, or cultures.

It is about fixing repeated system failures so warning signs lead to action not explanations after tragedy.

We are calling on the Australian Government to:

• Close the gap between intelligence and gun licensing

If someone is assessed as a credible extremist risk, that information must be shared with firearms authorities so access to guns can be denied or revoked.

• Take a firmer preventative approach

Waiting until someone is labelled an “imminent threat” has already cost lives. Authorities need stronger, lawful powers to intervene earlier.

• Improve immigration screening

Australia has the right to ensure people who move here intend to live peacefully, respect our laws, and contribute to society through stronger, meaningful screening.

• Support real integration, not isolation

New residents should be supported and expected to learn English, understand Australian laws, and engage with the broader community.

• Match migration with security capacity

Immigration levels must align with our ability to screen risk, support integration, and properly fund intelligence and prevention.

Australians deserve a system that acts on warning signs, not one that explains them away afterwards.

This petition will be formally submitted to:

The Minister for Home Affairs
The Attorney-General of Australia
The Shadow Minister for Home Affairs
The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee

With a request for urgent review and reform.
