Australian commercial radio should be playing more NEW local rock music.
The issue
For many decades Australia has given the world many legendary bands like Ac/Dc, Inxs, Midnight Oil, The Angels, Cold Chisel, The Screaming Jets, Baby Animals, Jet… The list goes on and on, but if you were to ask the average fan of rock music to name an Australian band from the past ten years they’d have a hard time in doing so.
It's not that the country has stopped producing rock bands. Far from it. There are countless bands Australia wide who are hardworking, playing gigs and building a name for themselves. Unfortunately, commercial radio has chosen to neglect this new generation of bands.
Most, if not all, of the legendary bands previously mentioned managed to get their music to a wider audience through the use of commercial radio. Many of their songs have become staples on radio play list, which is part of the problem. In recent times radio seems content to play the same songs from twenty years ago over and over.
Why can’t this new generation of bands get their music heard on radio? Especially when many of our local bands regularly tour overseas.
Radio overseas is still a big part of helping a band build a name for themselves. Many of our bands have their music played on radio overseas, where back home in Australia they are virtually unknown.
With our local live music scene growing, we are asking that commercial radio start doing more to support our local bands. Would it not be good for their own growth as a business to help develop new bands whose music they can play on air? Cause the music from twenty years ago will quickly become the music from thirty years ago. Sooner or later people will switch off.
