Dear President R.T. Erdoğan,

As we approach the solemn day of commemoration of the tragic events of 1915, it is imperative to address a pivotal historical fact: the proclamation of the Grand Jihad on November 11, 1914. This decree was delivered to the Ottoman Armed Forces by Sultan Reşad, later publicly announced on the grounds of Fatih Mosque on November 14, 1914. It set the stage for subsequent atrocities that would deeply scar our collective history. However the justification of this decision is misleading for the Ottoman empire  was not attacked. On the contrary she was the aggressor together with German naval forces towards Russian ports. Those non muslims, who were in expectation of local government reforms at the time, were all of a sudden put in a position of fighting an unjustified jihadist war.

As a Turkish citizen of Armenian descent, the legacy of these events is both personal and profound. Acknowledging the Grand Jihad proclamation is not merely an academic exercise, but a necessary step toward reconciliation and healing. It is crucial for us as a nation to confront our past with honesty and courage.

Recognizing the proclamation's role in fostering intolerance and violence during that era is essential for understanding the dynamics that led to the subsequent events of 1915. Historical evidence must be transparently reviewed, debated, and taught to future generations to ensure that such tragedies are neither forgotten nor repeated.

By acknowledging this historical truth, Turkey can demonstrate its commitment to justice, reconciliation, and peace, strengthening our shared values and forging a more inclusive future for all its citizens.

I urge you, Mr. President, to support academic and public discussions around the Grand Jihad proclamation. Encourage independent research and open dialogue as tangible steps toward acknowledging historical realities and fostering national unity.

Sign this petition to call on President Erdoğan to take meaningful action in recognizing the Grand Jihad's historical significance. Together, we can ensure the past is neither forgotten nor misrepresented, paving the way for a brighter, more honest future for Turkey.
