The Issue

I have always loved basketball. As a child who loves dribbling and shooting hoops, my dream is to play in the WNBA. However, as I look up to my idols in the league, it pains me to see the clear and unfair discrepancy in pay between female athletes in the WNBA and their male counterparts in the NBA. This issue affects not just me, but thousands of female athletes aspiring to pursue a professional basketball career.

In the NBA, players enjoy lucrative salaries that are reflective of their talent, dedication, and the revenue they help generate. By contrast, WNBA salaries are a fraction of what NBA players make, despite the incredible skill and hard work these athletes put into their craft. According to a Forbes report, the average NBA player salary is approximately $7 million, whereas the average WNBA player earns about $100,000. This massive disparity doesn't just undermine the efforts of hardworking athletes; it sends a message that women's sports are less valued.

Gender should not dictate the value of an athlete's pay. The WNBA's viewership and fan base have been consistently growing, with 2020 marking a remarkable 68% increase in viewership according to Sporting News. This demonstrates a clear demand and love for women’s basketball that should be reflected in fair pay for its athletes.

We are calling on the WNBA, team owners, and sponsors to take a stand for equality and remedy this disparity. Equal pay for WNBA players is not only a matter of fairness but also a step towards recognizing and appreciating the talent, passion, and contribution of female basketball players worldwide.

It's time for all of us to come together and push for a change that matters not only for current players but for future generations. Sign this petition to demand that WNBA players receive the equal compensation they deserve. Together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive sporting environment for everyone.
