On April 18 at approximately 9:30 in the morning, Ace Parisien was struck by a vehicle, resulting in his untimely death.
Ace was a beloved family member who left behind his dad Bryce Parisien, mom SaNoah LaRocque, and brother Halo Parisien. Ace was more than a pet, he was an important member of a family who is lost without him.
Ace loved to play tug of war with his brother Halo, lay in any puddle he could find, and, more than anything else, play fetch with his papa Bryan Parisien. Though his life was short, he enjoyed many adventures, namely his recent trip to Denver, Colorado where he was able to hike the Red Rocks with his family. As a small-town dog from the rez, he loved every minute of this trip.
Ace was a very well-behaved boy who never strayed far from home. On April 18, a callous driver ran over Ace in broad daylight. He laid on the road where he bled out, alone and scared. This driver took no precaution to avoid Ace (on a 4 lane road), and couldn't even stop to pull him from the road or call the number on his dog tag.
As Ace's family, we feel cheated of years of love and adventures with our puppy son.
This petition is to bring forward Ace's Act to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indian Tribal Council. Ace's Act seeks to impact multifaceted change on the Turtle Mountain Reservation.
First, Ace's Act would change wording within the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Tribal Code to include the definition of animal cruelty. No animal should be treated as disposable, and no animal should suffer the way Ace did. Furthermore, changes to the TMBCI Tribal Code would include prosecution for those who do not take recourse when involved in the slaughtering of another person's animal. This would require drivers to call law enforcement and report the traffic accident involving an animal, with penalties for not doing so.
Second, Ace's Act seeks to implement traffic cameras on main roads on the Turtle Mountain Reservation. These cameras will allow law enforcement to track instances of speeding, illegal activities, and hit and run incidents involving animals. There are a number of commercial traffic monitoring cameras available, and the institution of these would significantly improve crime prevention on the Turtle Mountain Reservation.
Ace did not die in vain. He was a loving and caring dog. As Anishinaabe people, we are taught to honor all life and to have respect for the four-legged creatures. We loved Ace beyond words, and Ace's Act will seek to ensure all dogs on the Turtle Mountain Reservation will have justice in the event of a tragedy such as Ace's. Miigwetch, thank you.
