Accessible Streets for All: Push Button Traffic Lights and Ramps for All Pedestrians

Accessible Streets for All: Push Button Traffic Lights and Ramps for All Pedestrians
The Issue
This petition's goal is to make the streets safer for people with disabilities through accessible push buttons, traffic lights, and ramps, that help pedestrians cross the road safely. This cause is essential because many residents of Pasig City, particularly persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and parents with young children in strollers, face difficulties crossing the streets safely. Through this petition, we seek to raise awareness of the issue and extend our support in ensuring accessibility and the safety of all. Furthermore, these improvements will help reduce the risk of accidents for both pedestrians and motorists.
How do I or other people benefit from signing this petition?
- Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) – Persons with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs, have mobility impairments, or are blind, will have improved, safer, and more independent access to roadways.
- Senior Citizens – Ramps and push-button signals allow for easier traversing on foot and decreases chances of accidents.
- Children and Students – Safe pedestrian crosswalks will foster a walking culture to schools and playgrounds.
- Parents with Infants in Strollers – Ramps provide easier access to sidewalks and crosswalks with babies in tow.
- General Pedestrians – all pedestrians from those who work in the vicinity to those who just pass by will have streets that are safer and more accessible.
- Local Government and Community – Promoting inclusivity will showcase Pasig as a progressive and compassionate city, while also enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents
So! What is our PLAN? 🤔
Our focal agenda narrows down to 3 main crucial implementations:
- Push Button & Traffic Lights
- Ramp and Street Improvements
- Pedestrian Overpass
🚦 Inclusive Pedestrian Push Button and Traffic Light Mechanism
PUSH BUTTON IMPROVEMENTS
- Audible Signal (Ticking or Beeping): Emits a consistent, non-intrusive ticking/beeping sound so pedestrians with visual impairments can easily locate it.
- Tactile Features: A raised arrow indicating the direction of the crossing.
- When push button is pressed: A beeping slow beeping noise will indicate that it is activated and is on wait.
- When it is safe to walk: A prolonged beep will sound indicating pedestrians may now cross.
- Height Accessibility: Installed at a universal height (120cm) so it can be reached by people using wheelchairs, children, and elderly pedestrians.
PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC LIGHT IMPROVEMENTS
- Visibility: Must be visible on both ends of the crossing and positioned at eye level for maximum visibility.
- Synchronization: All pedestrian signals should be coordinated with vehicle traffic lights to ensure predictable, safe crossing times.
- Automatic reset: If a pedestrian fails to cross in time, the system should reset safely without
♿ Inclusive Handicap Ramps and Even Leveled Streets
Physical & Tactile Features
- Metal, textured ramp connecting the elevated sidewalk and the street/pedestrian lane, painted yellow and black for quick-visibility.
- Ramp Standards (Height & Length) and Accessibility
- Slope: 1:12 based on common maximum in the U.S and the Philippines—rise and length based on the application.
Philippines (Batas Pambansa Blg. 344) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Even Leveled Streets
- Fill cracks in the streets to avoid/prevent tripping and stuck wheelchairs.
🚶 Inclusive Pedestrian Overpass
Ramp Features:
- Wide enough for wheelchairs to pass, ensures mobility devices can use the ramp safely
- Gentle slope - makes it easier for wheelchair users, seniors, and strollers to move
- Non-slip surface - prevents slipping, especially in wet conditions
Floor Features:
- Textured/rubberized non-slip flooring - adds grip and stability for safer walking
- Tactile pavings - guide and alert visually impaired individuals
Handrail Features:
