Accessible changing facilities!! We ARE worth MORE than the FLOOR!!!

The Issue

Our daughter is 10 years old and when we're out and about we have to change her on a dirty disabled toilet floor. She is not a baby anymore therefore the BABY changing units are far too small and will definitely not hold her weight. Having to do this is unhygienic, uncomfortable, degrading and stressful at times. In this day and age we SHOULD NOT be having to do this still.

I get told to carry a changing mat/yoga mat around with me. Why should I? Why should WE? Why do we have to carry around these extra things around to make our lives more of a struggle? Why can't there be changing benches? Hoists? Etc...

They are not babies but also cannot use the toilet. This isn't a new thing and nor will it ever stop. Children are born with disabilities ALL the time. People have acccidents that can cause them to need to use these kinds of facilities.

I do not understand in this day and age why I am having to STILL fight for this.

So many children, teens and adults are forced to get changed on a disbaled toilet floor where it is dirty, smelly and overall unhygienic. It is so degrading for them, embarrassing and not to mention the limited space and difficulty that it causes.

The basics for a public disabled toilet is not enough. The changing units are far too small. They are not babies. They need a changing bench with a hoist too.

Ideally in all of Hertfordshire but a start around Bushey, Watford and Borehamwood would be great.

King George Recreation Ground, Cassiobury Park and Meadow Park would be a great start too.

Many parents/carers are put off by taking their child/ren out in public because they are worried about having to change them. No able bodied person would lay on a toilet floor so why should someone with a disability be expected to do so?

Things need to change now. Especially as everything else is evolving yet these things are staying the same. They should be a priority.

Thank you for reading and I hope things change.
